Transportation
I
took the Park Connection bus
between Anchorage and Denali and from Seward to Anchorage. The buses make
a rest stop or two along the way. Some of the buses between Anchorage
and Denali have a stop in Talkeetna at a lodge that has a view of Mt.
McKinley, weather permitting. If you're staying at Denali Crow's Nest
Inn, tell the Park Connection that you want to be dropped off/picked up
at the Princess Lodge. It is at the bottom of the mountain from Crow's
Nest and the Crow's Nest shuttle can pick you up.
I rode the Alaska Railroad train from
Anchorage to Seward. Absolutely gorgeous train ride. If you want to take
pictures without windows in the way, the top half of the doors in between
the cars are open. But that also means that it can be very cold, so dress
appropriately. The drawback from hanging out there is that you can't hear
the guides talking about what the train is passing.
I
traveled from Sitka to Petersburg then Kethcikan via the Alaska
Marine Highway ferries. I read that it could be crowded, but it wasn't
at all crowded at the end of August. I had made reservations, but they
weren't necessary. But you would need to if you have a vehicle or if you
want to get a cabin. My ferry trips were close to schedule, but I heard
that they can be very late, so keep your schedule flexible. Some of the
ferries have a sit-down restaurant, others have a snack bar (the food
was fine at the snack bar I ate at). National Park Service rangers give
talks a few times a day and a movie is shown in the evening in one of
the lounges. The trips can be very long, so you'll want to have books
or something to do after you've had your fill of looking at the scenery.
I used Alaska Airlines for flights
between Anchorage, Juneau and Sitka.
