Petersburg

Hammer Slough, Petersburg.Petersburg is a nice small town that isn't visited by the big cruise ships, so it isn't as touristy as some other places. It is known as Alaska's "Little Norway" and its economy is largely based on fishing. The day I was there, a cannery was celebrating the large amount of fish they had canned and had a parade downtown.

It is interesting to walk along the Hammer Slough with the buildings built on stilts above the water. And Sing Lee Alley Books on Sing Lee Alley is a nice bookstore. And I saw many pretty gardens and homes as I wandered around town.

Parade in Petersburg.I stayed at the Tides Inn, a nice standard hotel. It has two buildings that face each other, so ask for a room with a view or you could end up looking right at the other building a few feet away. They have shuttle service and Internet access available in the lobby. The continental breakfast is pre-packaged pastries and canned juice. I got a nice scone at Alaskafe downtown and a couple good meals at the Northern Lights Restaurant on Sing Lee Alley.
