Anchorage

Whale sculpture in Anchorage.I didn't spend much time in Anchorage, it was mainly a transfer point for me in between a couple of other places.

Oscar Gill Guesthouse - Very nice three room non-smoking B&B. The rooms are on the second floor up a steep flight of stairs. The rooms are attractive and comfortable and have lovely flower window boxes. Two rooms share a bath while the third has a private bath. That room has cable TV while the other two have small black and white TVs/radios without cable. They serve a nice family-style breakfast - when I was there I had french toast, fruit, juice and coffee.

It isn't right downtown, it's about a 10-15 minute walk. The B&B is across the street from a park popular with sports teams, I don't know how late teams may play in the middle of summer - if noise bothers you, ask the owners about noise from the park in the summer. Other then the park, it is a quiet Snow City Cafe in Anchorage. Photo from www.snowcitycafe.comneighborhood. It was a little too much like staying at someone's personal house for my taste, but still a very nice place.

I liked Snow City Cafe at 4th and L. It is a very popular place for brunch and lunch, expect to wait if you go on the weekend around brunch time.

I also ate at Cilantro's Mexican Restaurant (611 West Ninth Ave) - liked the food but the restaurant was practically empty which is kind of a depressing atmosphere. Maybe it would be busier on a weekend night.

The New Sagayas grocery store at 13th and I has a lot of carry-out items and I got a salad at their salad bar that was the best salad I had in Alaska. Good place to stock up before you go to Denali (there is no food available in the park and I don't know what is available in the strip of gift shops/hotels near the park entrance).
